Tomatino Festival In Bunol, SpainLa Tomatina Festival is a week-long event at the end of August in eastern Spain, filled with music, fireworks, parades and an enormous tomato fight! On the night before La Tomatina there is a paella cooking contest.

The festival initially began in 1944 to honor the patron saints of Bunol, Luis Bertran and the Mare de Deu dels Desemparats, although exact theories on how the tomato fight originated are unknown.

In the past up to 50,000 people participated in the tomato fight at La Tomatina Festival, where 125 tons of uber-ripe tomatoes are flung throughout the town’s quaint streets. Now, La Tomatina is limited to 20,000 people, and you must have a ticket to participate.

Participants are advised to wear protective eyewear and gloves, and are encouraging to squash the tomatoes before throwing. You are only allowed to throw tomatoes. The actual tomato fight itself lasts from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Then the massive cleanup operation begins rid the red of the streets.

The tomato fight lasts one hour, until the cannons are fired, signifying the end of the event.
