Food fight! La Tomatina Festival is a week-long event at the end of August filled with music, fireworks, parades and an enormous tomato fight!
The festival initially began in 1944 to honor the patron saints of Bunol, Luis Bertran and the Mare de Deu dels Desemparats, although exact theories on how the tomato fight originated are unknown.
Nearly 50,000 people participate in the tomato fight at La Tomatina Festival, where tons of uber-ripe tomatoes are flung throughout the town’s quaint streets. Participants are advised to wear protective eyewear and gloves, and are encouraging to squash the tomatoes before throwing.
The tomato fight lasts one hour, until the cannons are fired, signifying the end of the event.
