Regata Storica, Venice ItalyWhere: Venice, Italy

When: First Sunday in September, annually. September 2, 2012

The Regata Storica is the main event in the Voga alla Veneta, a 510 year old Venetian tradition where the city canals are filled with gondolas, that race through the city.

Before the race, Venetian officials parade up the Grand Canal in 16th century-style crafts. The historic boats and gondolas are decorated, and the crews are dressed in elaborate costumes.

The Regata Storica is divided into four separate races, for young crew members, women, male crews, and champion rowers. The races test the strength and skills of Venice’s best gondoliers.
