The Venice Carnival or Carnivale Di Venezia is an annual festival that begins roughly two weeks before Ash Wednesday each year and ends on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday.
First held in Venice in the 11th century, Venice Carnival recently revived in 1978. Elaborate masks and costumes fill St. Mark’s Square, and live music plays throughout the outdoor festival.
On the streets, you’ll find face painting, and Venician food such as gelato and frittelles. Masks and costumes are rented throughout the city for those looking to participate in dressing up.
